In May 2007, I began my journey with the intention of riding the length of the Americas, from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina.

I rode a bicycle from Vancouver, up Vancouver Island to take the ferries to Alaska. From Anchorage, I flew to Prudhoe Bay to start the long road south. Cycling for nearly four months, and mostly enjoying the experience, after 6 500 kilometers,

I realised that the trip had become all about the bike, less about the journey.

So I bought a motorcycle.

I rode through Central and South America on a BMW 650 motorcycle.  So I spent time in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina.

On 10 December 2008, I reached Ushuaia, after 545 days and 54 000 km.

I then rode back to Buenos Aires, sold my bike (and camping gear), flew to Ushuaia and boarded the National Geographic Explorer to sail to Antarctica and back to Cape Town, a 24 day cruise. I am now back in South Africa preparing a new bike to ride around Africa, starting in September. I put my diaries and photos into a book to serve as a reminder for myself of all the amazing places and wonderful people I encountered over the past 22 months. This book of 302 pages and 1100 photographs is shown in the photo above.
